Estradiol (E2) is the major female sex steroid hormone. E2 is in charge of the development of female secondary sexual characteristics and tissues. The sites of E2 production: within the follicles of the ovaries, testicles, the adrenal glands, fat, liver, the breasts, and the brain. E2 is produced in the body from cholesterol.
